About Physics Units

Force

Force is any interaction that changes the motion of an object. The SI unit is the Newton (N), where 1 N = 1 kg·m/s². One Newton is the force required to accelerate 1 kilogram of mass at 1 meter per second squared.

  • Newton (N): SI unit of force
  • Pound-force (lbf): Force exerted by gravity on one pound of mass (≈ 4.448 N)
  • Dyne: CGS unit (1 dyn = 10⁻⁵ N)
  • Kilogram-force (kgf): Force exerted by gravity on 1 kg (≈ 9.81 N)

Energy

Energy is the capacity to do work. The SI unit is the Joule (J), where 1 J = 1 N·m = 1 kg·m²/s². Energy exists in many forms: kinetic, potential, thermal, chemical, electrical, etc.

  • Joule (J): SI unit of energy
  • Calorie (cal): Energy to raise 1g of water by 1°C (≈ 4.184 J)
  • Kilowatt-hour (kWh): Common for electrical energy (3.6 MJ)
  • BTU: British Thermal Unit (≈ 1055 J)
  • Electronvolt (eV): Atomic-scale energy (≈ 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ J)

Power

Power is the rate of energy transfer or work done per unit time. The SI unit is the Watt (W), where 1 W = 1 J/s. Power measures how quickly energy is used or produced.

  • Watt (W): SI unit of power (1 J/s)
  • Horsepower (hp): Traditional unit (1 hp ≈ 746 W)
  • Kilowatt (kW): Common for electrical appliances (1000 W)
  • Megawatt (MW): Used for power plants (1,000,000 W)

Pressure

Pressure is force per unit area. The SI unit is the Pascal (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N/m². Pressure is experienced in fluids, gases, and when forces act on surfaces.

  • Pascal (Pa): SI unit of pressure (1 N/m²)
  • Atmosphere (atm): Standard atmospheric pressure (101,325 Pa)
  • Bar: Meteorological unit (100,000 Pa)
  • PSI: Pounds per square inch (≈ 6895 Pa)
  • mmHg (Torr): Blood pressure unit (≈ 133.3 Pa)

Common Conversions

  • 1 kgf ≈ 9.81 N
  • 1 lbf ≈ 4.448 N
  • 1 kcal ≈ 4184 J
  • 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ
  • 1 hp ≈ 746 W
  • 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 14.7 psi
